Nearly 4 million pounds of steel are expected to be used in the construction of a new railroad bridge currently being built alongside Interstate 235 near NW 50 Street in Oklahoma City.

The bridge will replace the existing BNSF bridge just south of the I-235 interchange with I-44.

The new 44-foot-tall bridge is being built in two sections, each 275 feet long, said Lisa Shearer-Salim, a state transportation department spokeswoman.

It is being constructed alongside the interstate rather than over it in order to minimize traffic disruption.

"Motorists can expect lane closures in September/October when the contractor begins building the center pier for the new railroad bridge," Shearer-Salim said.

The next full closures of I-235 currently are projected to take place in early 2018 when the two spans of the new railroad truss bridge are to be moved into place and linked together, she said.

Work is currently slightly ahead of schedule.

I-235 is being widened to accommodate increased traffic flows, which made replacement of the bridge necessary.
