Source says Trump, Hill leaders to meet next Wednesday

August 30, 2017 at 09:00AM

WASHINGTON (AP) — Congressional aides say President Donald Trump will meet House and Senate leaders at the White House next Wednesday, as lawmakers return from an August break and plunge into a daunting pile of work.

Congress will face demands to speed aid to Houston to help the swamped metropolis recover from deadly Harvey.

By late September, lawmakers will have to pass one bill preventing an unprecedented federal default and another averting a government shutdown.

Trump has belittled congressional Republicans in recent weeks, particularly Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, leaving relations with his own party dicey.

Also slated to attend are House Speaker Paul Ryan, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

The aides spoke on condition of anonymity to disclose a meeting that hadn't yet been announced.

The Latest: Trump claims firsthand view of Harvey 'horror'

August 30, 2017 at 08:55AM

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Latest on President Donald Trump and Harvey (all times local):

9:40 a.m.

President Donald Trump says his "heart goes out even more" to Texans after witnessing "first hand" what he calls the "the horror & devastation" caused by Harvey.

Trump's Wednesday morning tweet comes the day after he traveled to Texas to meet with state and local officials.

Trump kept his distance from the damage during that visit, avoiding areas ravaged by flooding.

The minimal damage Trump did see — some boarded-up windows, uprooted trees and fences askew — was through the tinted windows of his SUV as he traveled from the Corpus Christi airport to a firehouse in a city that's already nearly back to normal.

Aides say Trump plans to return to Texas on Saturday to survey damage and meet with people displaced by the storm.

___

3:45 a.m.

President Donald Trump has answered Harvey's wrath by offering in-person assurances to those in the storm zone that his administration will work tirelessly to help the region recover.

During a visit Tuesday to Texas, the president kept his distance from the epicenter of the damage in Houston to avoid disrupting recovery operations.

He plans to return to the region Saturday to survey the damage and meet with some of the storm's victims.

Trump says 'talking is not the answer' regarding North Korea

August 30, 2017 at 08:22AM

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump says that "Talking is not the answer!" when it comes to North Korea.

And he's says the U.S. has paid the North Koreans what he calls "extortion money" for 25 years.

Trump's tweet comes on the heels of the North's recent missile test over Japan.

The White House isn't immediately responding to questions about the meaning of Trump's tweet.

North Korea has in the past temporarily halted nuclear development when the U.S. and others provided food aid or other types of compensation.
